Turn a Life Around -- Teach an Adult to Read and Write in Your Neighborhood
Many adults in our neighborhoods have little or no English literacy skills. They can’t read warning labels or help their children learn to read. They go unnoticed because many don’t know how or who to ask for help. And so their children grow up more likely to have low literacy skills. By volunteering with Tutors on Wheels just one hour a week, you can break this cycle.
Tutors on Wheels offers free one-on-one and group English literacy classes in Addison, Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Naperville, Northlake, Warrenville and Wheaton. Volunteers go to churches, businesses, libraries or community centers and teach English language literacy or help students study for the U.S. citizenship test.
Business Partnerships: Businesses that participate in our “Learning on the Job Partnerships” give their employees time to meet with their tutors at their work site. Improving literacy in the workplace improves worker safety and productivity and benefits our students, our businesses and our local economy. At the Audi / Acura Naperville Dealerships, tutors meet with their students at their workplace during a noon break.
Citizenship Preparation: Some Tutors on Wheels volunteers help students prepare for the U.S. Citizenship exam. Students learn U.S. civics and history while they improve their language skills.
Library Pals: Some of our Tutors on Wheels volunteers are also “Library Pals” who help their students obtain library cards and learn how to use the library.
