Serving Our Neighbor through Literacy

One-On-One Mobile English Literacy Programs for Adults

Since 1900, the Congregation of St. Joseph (previously known as the Sisters of St. Joseph in LaGrange) have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois by serving their neighbors in the areas of education, healthcare, and social and spiritual ministries. In keeping with their mission to “meet the unmet needs of the world,” the Congregation of St. Joseph in LaGrange founded the mobile literacy programs School on Wheels and Tutors on Wheels to serve adults with low literacy skills living in communities of Cook and DuPage counties.

School on Wheels is a one-on-one mobile literacy program that helps limited English speakers and other adults with low literacy skills improve their ability to speak, read and write English. The program's founding director was Sister Marybeth McDermott, a Congregation of St. Joseph nun with more than 40 years of experience as an educator. School on Wheels and Tutors on Wheels now has four full-time staff members, two drivers, and more than 300 volunteers that help carry out its mission of turning lives around through literacy. This project is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Illinois Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. School on Wheels and Tutors on Wheels are also funded by community grants and private donations.

small busEach volunteer is matched with his or her own student at one of seven tutoring sites located in Cicero, Hodgkins, Lombard, Summit, Villa Park, Westmont, and Woodridge. Tutoring takes place on a 40-foot bus equipped with ten learning stations and a library of literacy resources or at a partnering facility. Call us at (708) 354-9200, ext. 5060 or Tutors on Wheels at ext. 5035.

Tutors on Wheels offers free one-on-one and group English literacy classes for adults living in west suburban communities in Cook and DuPage counties, including Addison (3 sites), Bloomingdale, Naperville (3 sites), Warrenville, Wheaton and Woodridge. Instead of tutoring on a school bus, volunteers go to churches, businesses, libraries or community centers to teach English language literacy or help students study for the U.S. citizenship test.

Since School on Wheels was founded in 1993, our two literacy programs have trained about 2,000 tutors and transformed the lives of more than 4,000 adults. We need your help to continue to move people forward so that we can move our communities and our world forward. To volunteer or make a charitable donation, please call School on Wheels at (708) 354-9200, ext. 5060 or Tutors on Wheels at ext. 5035.
