School and Tutors on Wheels celebrates Women and Literacy
School and Tutors on Wheels celebrates 'Women and Literacy in Our Backyard' campaign in 2012 with series of events

As part of its 2012 “Women and Literacy in Our Backyard” campaign, School and Tutors on Wheels is celebrating the life of Cora Wilson, the founding mother of adult literacy, and is holding a series of events focusing on Women and Literacy. The campaign kicked off in March with an art collage created by students and volunteers called “Celebrating Female Treasures Within and Around Us” that shows colorful circles with words relating to women, education and empowerment being released into heaven by female hands.” Pictured with the collage are (l-r) Debbie Bradt, program director of School on Wheels; Insaf Ismail, a an English as a second language literacy student and citizenship award recipient, Kathy Haas, associate director of School on Wheels, and Theresa Denton, executive director of School and Tutors on Wheels.

AND LOTS OF FUN AT OUR END OF THE YEAR PARTY!
More than 250 students and tutors showed up to celebrate their accomplishments at our end of the year party. They were treated to Aurelio’s pizza and drinks donated by McDonalds, and everyone walked away with fun raffle prizes and free books. Sr. Janet Bolger, CSJ, helps her student Mahira Acevedo choose from among hundreds of free books donated for the students and their families by libraries and literacy supporters.

School on Wheels program director Debbie Bradt congratulates Jacqueline Diaz, the School on Wheels students who received the 2012 Marybeth McDermott Citizenship Award and a $350 check to cover half the cost of her citizenship application, while her proud tutor Jorene Gordon looks on. She wrote an inspiring essay on U.S.citizenship.

Our Volunteers Honored with Tutor Awards

She was recognized for her resourcefulness in teaching adult literacy.

School on Wheels tutor Mary Paranteau (second from left) received the Outstanding Tutor Award at the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois’ 2011 On the Road to Literacy Conference. She was recognized for taking great interest in her students' lives and cultures and individualizing her lessons based on their unique needs. She is pictured here with the award presenters.

Tutors celebrate World Book NightBook-loving tutor Ellen Brosnahan celebrates World Book Night
On World Book Night in April, volunteer Ellen Brosnahan gave the tutors and students on the School on Wheels bus 25 copies of the book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," by Maya Angelou, that were donated by Anderson Books. “I am inspired by the eagerness to learn that I see in my students,” she says. She is pictured with her student, Amy Park.

Raffle winner chooses prize at School and Tutors on Wheels end of the year partyPRIZES! PRIZES!
Theresa Denton gives an overjoyed ESL student, Angelica Cansino, the coffee maker she won in the raffle at the School and Tutors on Wheels end of the year party in June for students and volunteers. Now she drinks her coffee every morning while she does her homework.
